WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR THE OLIFANTS RIVER SYSTEM

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The purpose of the study is to develop an integrated water quality management plan for the Olifants river system.

The objective of the plan will address and incorporate the required management measures to maintain and improve the water quality in the Olifants River system) the fitness for use of the water resources in a holistic manner.

The management measures will be addressed at both national and sub-catchment levels.

The plan will detail feasible management options for implementation in the short term (next 5 years), assess the medium term strategies (10 years) longer term strategies.

A further important deliverable from the study will be a set of integrated Water Quality Planning Limits (WQPLs) for the Olifants WMA and the individual sub-catchments that will include:

  • Adjustment to the existing WQPLs
  • Development of WQPLs where gaps exist
  • Alignment to Resource Quality Objectives (RQOs).
