The Lower Orange refers to the stretch of Orange River between the Orange-Vaal confluence and Alexander Bay
or Oranjemund where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean.
The area is extremely hot and dry and most of the catchment can be considered as desert
with annual precipitation dropping to below 25 mm in some areas.
Most of the area's wealth comes from either agriculture or mining, both of which depend
to some degree on Orange River water.
