Office hours: 07:30 to 12:30 and 13:00 to 15:45, Monday to Friday.
Please note that part of the N1 route is a toll road, and a visit to RQS costs about 2 x R6.60 (Jan 2009).

From the south

Approaching along the N1 from the south, pass the N4 interchange and the Stormvoël-Mamelodi off-ramp. The N1 curves through a poort in the Magaliesberg, with a large quarry on the left. Take the Zambezi Drive exit just after this quarry, pass through the tollgate and turn right along Zambezi Drive (i.e. under the N1 freeway).

Don't miss the turn, or you will have to drive to the next toll gate and pay to turn around!

Pretorians familiar with the north-eastern suburbs might want to avoid the toll (and lengthen their journey) by going through East Lynne - not recommended if you don't know exactly where you are going.

From the north

If you approach along the N1 from the north, you will see the Magaliesberg stretched out in front of you, and will pass under a strange restaurant built across the freeway and the N4 freeway junction (from the west). Take the Zambezi drive exit and turn left.

R513 and R573 to the dam

Now that you are on Zambezi Drive (the R513 Cullinan Road), drive for about one kilometre until you come to a set of traffic lights.

Turn left along the R573, the notorious Moloto Road to kwaMhlanga (urban sprawl along this road has brought an increased water demand, an 80km/h speed limit and crime).

You will pass the Kameeldrift Police Station, cross over a railway line and observe the scenic Zeekoegat Sewage works on the left. After 11 to 12 kilometres, the road passes over a slight rise (the rim of an ancient crater) and you will catch a glimpse of Roodeplaat Dam on the right.

The turn-off to Roodeplaat Dam and RQS is on the right as you start descending on the other side of the rise [the sign says DWAF Training ->]. Indicate early, especially if you see a large bus or sand truck in your rear-view mirror! They try to become airborne down this hill.

Drive along the narrow tarred road for about 2km, past a water tower and the Training Centre, and over two speed bumps. You will come to a fence blocking the road: RQS is on the left, behind the sliding security gate. Please park in front of the building and report to reception.

Note that long alternative routes exist via Walmannsthal or Baviaanspoort if the Moloto road is blocked for any reason: ask a member of staff for directions.
