2005 WINNERS

Research Category (35 & over) - Prof. Maggy Momba
Prof. Momba has significantly contributed to scientific knowledge in terms of research and publications in areas of health-related water microbiology, water use and wastewater management. She has about 40 publications in refereed/peer-reviewed articles in journals and conference proceedings over the past 10 years. In spite of her heavy teaching load at the University of Fort Hare, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, Prof. Momba established a research programme on Water Quality Management in the Eastern Cape Province. This research programme has lead to the establishment of one of the largest postgraduate programmes at the university.
Research Category (under 35) - Lungile Mthembu
Lungile Mthembu is a Microbiologist at Umgeni Water where her major role is safeguarding public health and safety through microbiological monitoring and testing. She successfully implemented the SANAS 17025 for two testing methods now employed in the Microbiology Laboratory of Umgeni Water. She has been instrumental in encouraging staff to place greater emphasis on quality and customer-care. In 2004 she took up the challenging position of Security, Safety, Health and Quality Co-ordinator at Umgeni Water. In that role, she continues to ensure that Umgeni Water provides quality water that conforms to regulatory standards, as well as customer expectations, while maintaining the interest of public health.
Community Development Category - Portia Mphephu
As Safety Representative for the Duduza Spruit Storm Water Project, Portia Mphephu not only played a vital role in insuring the long term safety of the community from the danger of flooding, but also helped to administer community job creation and participation. The erection of temporary homeswithin the flood lines in some areas in Tembisa had lead to serious problems such as drowning and loss of property. Ms Mphephu's work on the storm water project that ensured the 1.5km channelling of the Duduza Spruit was central to addressing this.
Education and Communication Category - Thelmah Mavimbela

Thelmah Mavimbela is a Grade 5 teacher at Mhwayi Primary School in water-scarce Mpumalanga. During breaks and cleaning periods, learners have had to walk long distances looking for water. Often they could find none. With limited resources, Ms Mavimbela developed an effective policy of water harvesting and conservation at the school. As a result, this educator has made a real difference in the lives of many learners, and has contributed to community development in general.
Management & Policy Category - Sethe Mothibi-Thinane

As Group Corporate Development Manager for Global Forest Products, Sethe Mothibi-Thinane is one of the few black women to enter the world of Water Management in the forestry environment which is mainly male dominated. She has been appointed as member of the Rand Water Board and has been nominated to serve on the Inkomati Governing Board, focusing on all water catchments in the Mpumalanga province. Her focus is mainly on sustainability and access to water by the villagers in the rural areas.
