Background
The South African Government is committed to eradicate the sanitation backlog by 2010. The sanitation backlog is not affecting South Africa only, it is an international challenge, thus the international commitment to eradicate the backlog by 2015.
The Dakar conference held in December 2004 resolved that sanitation and hygiene week be celebrated and it should culminate to World Water Week. The main objective of sanitation week is to raise the profile of sanitation and encourage the municipalities and the communities to prioritise sanitation, health and hygiene.
