South African Youth Water Prize (Finals), 02 June 2011


The South African Youth Water Prize is an annual school based programme by the Department to address the skills shortage in the science and engineering fields. The programme is aimed at high school learners from Grade 9 to 11 who have interest in science and technology. The competition begins at provincial level and proceeds to the national level. The national winner gets the opportunity to represent the country in the Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Sweden where they get to compete with learners from other 30 countries.


  • To promote the protection of South Africa‚Äôs natural resources.

  • To encourage and empower the youth to participate actively in integrated and community based water resource management.

  • To expose and enhance the interest of the youth to science and technology.

  • To motivate the youth to pursue water management careers.

  • To provide opportunities for the youth to interact with their peers, in order to share knowledge and experiences related to water and the environment, nationally and internationally.

Who can participate?

  • High school learners from Grade 9 to 11

  • Individuals or groups of learners, not more than three

  • Learners should not be older than 20

  • Learners must have an interest in science and technology

What should learners do?

Identify problems related to water in their school or community, e.g. water wastage, pollution of water sources and water borne diseases. Learners must take action by initiating a project, do research and recommend solutions that will solve the identified problem.
