The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) has
developed draft
regulations [PDF - 45KB] governing the recreational use of water or
the water surface of water resources in South Africa.
These regulations are intended, inter alia, to:
- Promote the sustainable and ecologically sensitive
use of water resources;
- Restructure the commercial recreational water use
industry, to address historically imbalances and to achieve equity
within the industry;
- Promote the safe use of water resources for
recreation, in harmony with other uses of the resource; and
- Achieve practical, broad and accountable decision
making with respect to the recreational use of water.
The Department held briefing sessions to outline the
intent of these regulations, and to present the draft regulations for
comment on 15 and 17 February 2005. Further briefing
sessions will be held as part of the promulgation process. The workshop
was funded by DFID.
Stakeholders are invited to comment on the draft
regulations [PDF - 45KB] by completing the Issue Response
Form. Comments should be forwarded to Loraine
Fick by 28 February 2005.
