DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
PROGRAMME
DESCRIPTION
The
Directorate: Water Conservation has a comprehensive Community Development
and Environmental Education programme. The project spreads awareness
among the general public about the urgency of conserving water for
present use, as well as for future generations. Through a number
of projects all members of society are encouraged to become involved
in monitoring and evaluating how we use and conserve water.
Key
Components
- Partnership
in the National Environmental Education Project (NEEP) with the
Departments of Education to promote adult education
- Production
and distribution of resource materials such as the Enviroteach 'educators'
manual, resource booklets, television and radio programmes, posters,
training manuals and devices to promote water efficiency, awareness
and sustainable use
- Cholera
education project
- Consumer
education pilot projects
- Facilitation
of important awareness campaigns such as National Water Week and
exhibitions
- Development
of a strategy around environmental education, capacity-building,
skills development
- Women
in Water Awards which was launched in 2002
