Adelaide is an established Karoo town situated on the banks of the Koonap River, approximately 200 km north-east from Port Elizabeth. The Koonap River which is tributary of the Great Fish River has a total catchment area of 3 360 km2 and is approximately 220 km long. The Koonap River is the only major undeveloped river in the area. The abstraction of water at present is by means of either canals or pumping. Although a relatively small town, Adelaide is the business center of the Koonap River irrigation area.

Hydrologically, the Koonap River is situated in tertiary catchment Q92 within the Fish to Tsitsikamma Water Management Area (WMA). The headwaters of the Koonap River are in the Winterberg Mountains from which it flows southwards past the town of Adelaide.
