Pella is a small settlement on the banks of the Orange River founded by the London
Missionary Society in 1814. It is named after the village which provided refuge for
Christians in Macedonia in biblical times.

The settlement is famous for dates which are grown in the area because it is extremely
hot and experiences no frost - ideal climatic conditions for the date palm.

There is a large offtake at Pella located at one of the numerous deep pools where a
pump station is located. Water is pumped from the Orange River to Pofadder and
the large zinc mine at Aggeneys. Almost 5 million m3 per annum are
abstracted from the Orange River and treated at a small local purification plant mainly to
remove sediment before it is transferred.
