Located just downstream of the Vaal River Confluence, Katlani is used as a flood
monitoring station by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. Historically
metor-burst communication was used at this station but this has now been replaced by
satellite data transmission as part of the Southern Hydrological Cycle Observation System
(SHYCOS).

There is no measuring structure at this location but the cross section properties have
been measured using a cable way and are used to calculate river flows via a rating curve.
The site is used primarily for measuring flood flows and is not accurate at low
flows.
