National Groundwater Information System (NGIS) is a portfolio of projects designed to meet increasing demands for groundwater information in a rapidly changing water business environment. The system will be distributed among regional offices and caters for the integration of spatial and non-spatial data and information. It also accommodates increased visualization and analytical functionality.
The portfolio of the NGIS project includes several applications, namely
The National Groundwater Archive (NGA)
The NGA is a web-based system that will allow capturing, viewing, modifying and extraction of groundwater related data by registered users. Currently it is focusing on data related to points known as geosites (boreholes, wells, springs, etc). Line and polygon related data will be made available in future. The NGA will replace the existing Open National Groundwater Database (Open NGDB).
OPEN-NGDB
This is presently the National database system for managing the groundwater data and is accessible to trained users. It is available in the National Office and all Regional offices, although not all these offices are actively capturing groundwater data.
Currently there are about 242 000 records on the Open-NGDB. To obtain any of this data please contact georequests@dwaf.gov.za.
REGIS-Africa
REGIS-Africa is an acronym for Regional Geohydrological Information System. It is a complete hydrogeological information system, in which all relevant hydrogeological and related data are stored, managed, manipulated and queried in a uniform way. REGIS-Africa can be used for the evaluation of (geo) hydrological situations on a national and regional scale.
The application is available in the National Office and all Regional Offices.
CHART
(C)Hydro Geochemical Analysis and Reporting Tool (CHART) is a combination of a Management Information System and Decision-Support System which integrates geohydrological and hydro chemical data in order to establish more effective and efficient monitoring management.
GEOHYDROLOGICAL REPORTS SYSTEM
Geohydrological Reports System is a database that contains groundwater related technical reports. Approximately 2600 technical reports are available in the library at National Office. These reports reflect the hydrogeological investigations done by DWAF officials or consultants. A web based system allows one to inquire about the availability of specific documents and are made available in PFD format. To query the database connect to http://www.dwaf.gov.za/ghreports, using 'Guest' as User Name and 'guest001' as password. This will enable the user to search the system; alternatively mail your requests to georequests@dwaf.gov.za.
Other groundwater related documents or 1:500 000 Hydrogeological maps and brochures are also available on request. (See ordering details above).
GEODATABASE
The geodatabase is an ARCGIS GEODATABASE storing all cleaned and verified spatial hydrogeological data. From here data is fed into other applications, such as the REGIS-Africa.
Spatial data can be obtained from georequests@dwaf.gov.za. To view datasets available at the Department go to http://www.dwaf.gov.za/BI and click on metadata.
